Somalia 2035Food security and the blue economy
Livestock, farms and the sea can feed the nation and grow exports.
Three engines of growth
Livestock
The main livelihood for millions of Somalis and the largest export – camels, goats, sheep and cattle.
Agriculture
Farming along the Jubba and Shabelle rivers: sorghum, maize, sesame, fruit and vegetables.
Fisheries
Rich waters along more than 3,000 km of coast, still largely undeveloped.
Skills and research needed
Droughts and floods are becoming more frequent. Somalia needs experts who can make farming and herding more resilient and add value to products:
- Veterinary services and livestock export standards
- Irrigation, water harvesting and drought-resistant crops
- Fisheries management, cold chains and processing
- Agribusiness, cooperatives and finance for farmers
