Using AI well as a Plasma student

AI can be a patient tutor that is available day and night – if you use it to learn, not to avoid learning.

The right way

Ask AI for hints, not for answers

The best AI tutors are designed to guide students towards the answer with hints and questions, instead of writing the solution for them. That is how Plasma students should use any AI tool.

Explaining difficult concepts, summarising articles and suggesting research ideas are good uses – as long as you still read, think and write yourself.

Good ways to use AI in your studies

Explain it again

Ask for a simpler explanation of a topic from your lecture, then check it against your notes and textbook.

Practise and revise

Ask for practice questions on a topic, answer them yourself, then ask for feedback.

Debug, don’t copy

When your program fails, ask for a hint about the error rather than a complete solution.

Improve your English

Ask for feedback on the grammar and clarity of a paragraph you wrote – the ideas must remain yours.

Plan your time

Use AI to break a large assignment or your revision into a realistic weekly plan.

Start your research

Use AI to find keywords and topics, then search the library and real journals for the sources.

Before you submit any work

Check the rules

Has your lecturer allowed AI for this assignment, and for which tasks?

Verify every fact

AI can be confidently wrong. Check facts against your course materials.

Check every reference

Find each source in the library or the journal itself – AI tools are known to invent references that look real.

Declare your use

Add a short note explaining which AI tool you used and for what.

Rules

What is not allowed

Submitting work written by AI as if it were your own is academic misconduct, in the same way as copying another student’s work.

  • Using AI in an examination unless the examiner allows it
  • Hiding or misrepresenting how you used AI
  • Citing references you have not checked yourself
  • Typing other people’s personal or patient information into a public AI tool
