Preparing Somalia’s AI generation

Artificial intelligence is changing every profession. At Plasma University we are preparing our students – and our country – to lead that change, not to follow it.

A changing world

AI is now part of every university

Universities around the world have moved quickly. In 2025 surveys, around nine out of ten university students said they already use AI tools in their studies. The best universities no longer ask whether students should use AI – they teach every student how to use it well, safely and honestly.

Plasma University takes the same approach. We see AI as a skill every graduate needs, whether they become a nurse, an accountant, an engineer, a teacher or a software developer.

Benefits

How AI strengthens a modern university

A personal tutor for every student

AI tutors can explain a topic again, give practice questions and feedback at any hour – designed to give hints, not to do the work.

Answers 24 hours a day

Questions about admissions, timetables and fees can be answered at any time, so students and families get help faster.

Help before it is too late

Attendance and results data can show early when a student is struggling, so advisers can step in.

Faster research

AI helps researchers search the literature, analyse data and translate – while the researcher checks every result.

Language and access

Translation and speech tools help students who study in English as a second language and students with disabilities.

Smarter administration

Routine work in finance, records and planning becomes faster, leaving more time for teaching and students.

Plasma today

Where Plasma University stands

Plasma University is building on strong foundations:

  • Faculty of Computing and IT – Computer Science, Information Technology and the Master of Computer Science teach programming, data and software engineering, the foundations of artificial intelligence.
  • Computer laboratories on our campuses, where students learn by doing.
  • One digital university – since 2026 all eleven campuses work on one university system for student records, fees, finance and staff.
  • The Annual Research Conference – the 6th conference in 2026 included research on digital transformation and digital health in Somalia.
  • Clear rules for the honest and responsible use of AI by students and staff.
Technology

The AI models changing the world

The main families of modern AI that our students learn about and work with.

Language models

Chat assistants that read and write text, answer questions, summarise documents and write computer code.

Vision models

AI that understands images – from reading X-rays and lab slides to checking crops and livestock from photos.

Speech and translation

Speech recognition and translation that let people use technology in their own language, including Somali.

Coding assistants

Tools that help programmers write, explain and test software faster – but only skilled programmers can check the results.

AI agents

Systems that can carry out tasks step by step, such as searching, filling forms or analysing data, under human supervision.

What comes next

AI is becoming multimodal – combining text, images, speech and data – and running on ordinary phones. The people who understand it will shape every industry.

Somalia’s future

What AI can do for Somalia

With more than 70% of its population under 30 and one of the most widely used mobile money systems in Africa, Somalia is ready for digital change. AI can help the country leapfrog:

  • Health – supporting diagnosis and health workers in regions with few doctors
  • Agriculture and livestock – early warning of drought, disease and market prices
  • Banking and mobile money – fraud detection and better financial services
  • Government services – faster, more transparent public services
  • The Somali language – Somali still has little digital data, so AI works less well in Somali. Somali researchers are needed to build Somali-language AI – a great opportunity for our graduates
